Shelby Baron On Elite Entry List

The ITF announces the entries for the 2012 Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters in Tarbes, France.

Hawaii’s own, Shelby Baron is selected to compete in the prestigious 2012 Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters event in Tarbes, France. Eight of the top ranked junior boys and four of the top ranked junior girls from across the globe meet alongside the last four days of the Les Petits As tournament. Presently, ranked #1 in the USA girls division and #7 in the World girls division, Shelby will have a great opportunity to measure herself in her fifth international competition. Her most notable was the 2011 Junior World Team Cup in South Africa where she led the USA team to a respectful 5th place. She also had great success in Taiwan, Thailand and Canada. Shelby will be joined by Mimi Kennell, USTA Hawaii Pacific Section Director of Junior Tennis. A former Fed Cup player for Taiwan and decorated NAIA Rolex National Doubles Champion, Mimi Kennell will be a great asset, coaching Shelby in this world class level.
“My expectation is to gain experience and develop my game, especially my mental game” said Shelby Baron. “Whether it’s instruction or just watching top juniors compete, I will learn a lot. I also hope to have fun because playing tennis isn’t worth anything if you’re not having fun doing it.”
Rhoda Baron, Shelby’s mother accompanied Shelby to her first wheelchair tennis experience outside of Hawaii a couple of years ago. It was the ITF Cruyff Junior Wheelchair Tennis Camp in California. Since then, they’ve been through numerous airports and train stations. They are now experienced world travelers. “When I take a few moments in our hectic daily schedule to reflect upon this past year, I find myself still in awe about Shelby’s accomplishments. We are so very proud of her” said Rhoda Baron.
“We’ve been working hard on the clay courts at the Waikiki Tennis Club these last several months to get her ready for an opportunity like this. To be at her side at this level of competition will be tremendous” said Mimi Kennell.
The event is scheduled with the famous Les Petits As tournament when champions such as Michael Chang, Rafael Nadal, Martina Hingis and Kim Clijsters won junior championship titles.
